Biography

Florence D. Mettemeyer was born in Quincy, Illinois, the youngest daughter of Joseph Mettemeyer and Caroline Hummel.

Florence grew up in Gilmer Township, on the old Mettemeyer place in the St. Joseph's Church neighborhood. She was baptized at St. Joseph's Church on June 20, 1920 by Father Flori. Her sponsors were her aunt and uncle, Anton and Dorothy Hummel.[1]

She attended St. Joseph School, where she received her First Holy Communion on May 1, 1932, from Father Anton M. Jascke. Her teacher was Agnes Bockenfeld. She graduated from "Grammar" School at St. Joseph's on May 13th, 1934.

She married Virgil G. Klues on August 17, 1938. They had four children.

Florence passed away on February 1, 1970 at the age of 49 from cancer.

Shower is Given for Recent Bride

Mrs. Virgil Klues was honored at a shower Sunday afternoon given by her sister, Mrs. Tim Mast, and her sister-in-law, Mrs. Albert Mettemeyer, in the home of Mrs. Tim Mast on South Forty-eighth street. Bunco was played and prizes won by Miss Viola Rickers, Vician Sibbing and Mrs. Frank Jansen. The bride was presented a 78-piece china set from the guests.

Besides those mentioned, others present were: Mrs. William Ohnemus, Mrs. Sam Price, Mrs. Joe Neisen, Mrs. Frank Neisen, Mrs. Ralph Rossmiller, Mrs. Len Rossmiller, Mrs. Ray Goehl, Mrs. Joe Flessner, Mrs. Joe Goehl, Mrs. Arther Genenbacher, Mrs. Ann Genenbacher, Mrs. Carrie Mettemeyer, Mrs. Ralph Reinhart, Mrs. Charles Hildebrand, Mrs. Frank Altgilbers, Mrs. John Mast, Mrs. Edward Strieker, Mrs. Ruby Sibbing, Miss Ethel Klues, and Miss Emily Schreake. Those unable to attend included: Mrs. Kate Starman, Mrs. Arther Lenz, Mrs. Frank Unismig, Mrs. Virgil Fessler and Miss Vera Fessler.[2]

Obituary

Mrs. Florence Dorothy Klues, 49, of 2801 Harrison, died Sunday, February 1, 1970, at 8:45am in Blessing Hospital where she had been a patient since December 29.

Mrs. Klues was co-owner with her husband, Virgil G. Klues, of Evergreen Gardens. She was born June 16, 1920, in Fowler, a daughter of Joseph and Caroline Hummel Mettemeyer. She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church. She married Virgil Klues August 17, 1938 in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Hannibal Missouri.

Surviving are the husband; two daughters and two sons:

  • Mrs. Kenneth (Barbara) Holm, of Quincy,
  • Dennis, of Quincy,
  • Donald, of Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri,
  • Sharon, at home,

a brother, Albert Mettemeyer of Quincy, three sisters, Mrs. Harry (Alvena) Dempsey, Mrs. Tim (Leona) Mast and Mrs. Helen Reinhart, all of Quincy, and four grandchildren, Michael, Dan, Karen and Jill Holm, all of Quincy.

A brother, Ralph Mettemeyer, preceded her in death.[3]

Funeral Services for Mrs. Florence Dorothy Klues were held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Duker Funeral Home and at 10 in St. Peter Catholic Church. The Rev. John Morris officiated. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers were James Sibbing, Thomas Strieker, William Klues, Robert Mettemeyer, Ronald Reinhart and Edward Dempsey.[4]
