I also checked your GEDmatch against my 98 year old father-in-law and found no shared DNA.
Do you have any older relatives who have tested?
Alas!, so far I could not persuade any other relative to take a DNA test (Germans seem to be more reticent on that than Americans). I'll keep you posted if something should come up, and hope you'll do the same :)

My husband is a descendent of the "Merritts of Rye." His grandmother was Alberta Merritt Hughes, b. 10 Dec 1886, Marlborough, Ulster, NY; daughter of David Morgan Merritt; son of Charles C Merritt, a master carriage builder in Newburgh, NY; son of David I. Merritt & Sarah "Sally" Cropsey; son of Josiah Merritt Esq. & Rachel Sherwood; son of George Merritt & Glorianna Purdy of White Plains/Newburgh, NY; ; son of Samuel Merritt & Elizabeth Underhill; Wethersfield, CT-Rye, Westchester, NY; son of Thomas Merritt & Susan Cromwell (Cranniwell). Our daughter lives in Ulster County where many of the Merritt family settled. Would love to see your notes. My husband is Gary Clough Clough-2154, our daughter is Clough-1054
