Biography

William was born in 1806. In 1833, he was the first postmaster at the Hyde Park village post office in Luzerne, County (now Lackawanna), PA. He also erected the first store there in 1833. He was the first burgess of Hyde Park Borough, starting in 1852 and probably serving two years. Treasurer of the Hyde Park Gas Company. He passed away in 1877. "The Hon, William Merrifield, of Luzerne county, who recently died, was a member of the Legislature more than thirty years ago, and Associate Judge of the Luzerne Common Pleas some years later. He had also been Mayor of Scranton."^[1]
