Maria Phoebe Merriam was born on 26 December 1835 in Millbury, Worcester, Massachusetts, United States to Amasa Merriam and Philena Case. ^[1]

Maria married Albert Oren Cummins, son of Oren and Betsey Cummins, on 18 November 1853 in Millbury, Worcester, Massachusetts, United States. She was 17. He was 24 and worked as a school teacher. ^[2] They had the following known children: Fannie Maria Cummings and Elizabeth Cummings.

In 1860, Maria and Albert were living in Millbury, Millbury, Worcester, Massachusetts, United States with their daughters, Fannie and Elizabeth. Albert was working as a farmer. ^[3]
