Biography

Leo W. Mergen, 93, of Lancaster, died February 25, 2007, at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, rural Lancaster.

He was born September 2, 1913, in Glen Haven Township, the son of Peter and Susan (Nieses) Mergen.

He married Clara Heinrichs on September 7, 1940, at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster. They farmed in the Glen Haven area until 1984 when they moved to Lancaster.

Leo was on the parish council of St Mary's Church in Glen Haven and on the building committee of Bloomington High School. He was a member of the Pork Producers the Cattlemen's Association, the Sportsman's Club and he was a 4-H leader.

He loved fishing, boating, farming and being with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his children, Martha (Carl) Neis, Bloomington, Janice (Leon) Stern of Shiocton, and Robert (Mary) Mergen of Glen Haven; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Imogene Mergen, Madison, and Marjorie Mergen, Bloomington; brother-in-law, Frank Patcle of Potosi; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Leo was preceded in death by wife, Clara; a son, Peter; five brothers and six sisters.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster with Reverend William Seipp officiating. Burial was in Gockel Cemetery in Glen Haven Township.
