Biography

French Washington Melick was born on 9 Apr 1871 in Jackson Township, Knox County, Ohio. He was the son of Jones A Melick and Hannah Allen.^[1][2] In 1880, his family lived in Jackson Township, Knox County, Ohio.^[3]

French married Malana Elzina "Zina" Johns on 10 Oct 1889 in Coshocton County, Ohio.^[4] In 1900 and 1910 they lived in New Guilford/Perry Township in Coshocton County, Ohio.^[5][6] In 1920, they lived in Newark, Licking County, Ohio.^[7] He was a glassworker for a time and then operated a threshing machine.^[8] They had eight known children, one of whom died as an infant:

• Orlena "Lena" Alice (Melick Thomas ) Baumgardner (1897-1982)
• Clayton Stanley Melick (1900-1947)

French's wife Zina died in 1925. French has not been identified yet in the 1930 census, but in 1940 he was living in Newark, Licking County, Ohio, working as a thresher and boarding in Mary D. Green's household.^[9]

French died on 27 Mar 1946 in Newton, Licking County, Ohio.^[2][8] He was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Newark, Licking County, Ohio.^[10]
