Biography

1776 Project
Sergeant Nathan Meigs served with Connecticut Line during the American Revolution.

Nathan was born in 1758. He was the son of Nathan Meigs and Lucy Starr. He passed away in 1810.[1][2][3]

In Nov 1783, he married Mabel Parmelee, who was born 26 Feb 1767 and died 12 Dec 1843, at age 84, in Guilford.[1][3][4] Children:[3][4]

  1. Joy Meigs, b. 6 Jul 1785; d. Dec 1843; m. Elsie Reeves
  2. Isaac Meigs, b. 3 Jul 1787; d. 29 Apr 1847; m. Hannah Kimberly
  3. Polly Meigs, b. 1789; d. 30 Aug 1828; m. Abel Kimberly (she is called Sallie in "Record of the descendants of Vincent Meigs..."
  4. Frederic Meigs, b. 1790; m. Mary Stevens

Revolutionary War Service

  • Per Mabel's pension application, Nathan served in the 2nd CT Regiment, which was commanded by Col. Swift, from 8 Aug 1775 to 8 Jun 1783, when he was discharged by Gen. Washington. His discharge paper is part of his widow's pension application.[5]
  • He is on the rolls as a private in General Wooster's (First) Regiment in 1775.[6]
  • He is on the pay rolls as a private from Guilford in Captain Hand's Company of Colonel Talcott's Regiment for the "New York Expedition" from 22 Mar 1776 to 18 Apr 1776.[7]
  • He is on the rolls as a Corporal in Captain Hall's Company in the Connecticut Line 1777-1781. He was promoted to Sergeant 10 Jul 1880.[8]
  • He is on the rolls as a Sergeant in Captain Baldwin's Company in the Connecticut Line in 1781.[9]
  • He is on the rolls as a Sergeant in Captain Potter's Company in the Connecticut Line in 1783.[10]
  • His widow Mabel was awarded pension for his service in 1838.[5] She is on the list of CT pensioners at Guilford in 1840.[11]

Research Notes

  • From the New York Weekly Museum, published 21 Jul 1810: Meigs, Nathan, was shot and thrown overboard from a boat, in NY Sound, by his son.[12] It should be noted that there are other Meigs families in the CT and NY areas, and the story in Guilford with regard to the Nathan Meigs profiled here is that he drowned in the Connecticut River in May 1810.
