Stephen Hall Meek was born on June 4, 1805 in Saltville, Washington County, Virginia, United States, the son of James Meek and Spica (Walker) Meek. He was the brother of Mary (Meek) Snodgrass and Joseph Meek.
Stephen was a fur trapper and guide in the American west, most notably a guide on a large wagon train known as the Meek Cutoff. Stephen wrote an autobiography in which he claimed to be related to President Polk.
Stephen married Elizabeth Schoonover in May 1845 at St. Louis, Missouri. They had one son they named George.
Stephen died January 4, 1889 in Etna, Siskiyou County, California, United States.
