John was born in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, USA on August 14, 1871. He was the son of Bernard McNamara and Mary Dempsey.

The 1910 US Census for Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, USA shows John residing with his parents and siblings in Michigan. Family members were Bernard (80), Mary 71) and their children Mary (38), John (40), Paul (36), Teresa (31) and Katie (30). All these children are noted as being single except John who is married. The census states that he was a labourer (travelling).
John passed away in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, USA on Sept 19, 1930, age 59 and is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, USA.
