Biography

Hugh (McLeman) MacLeman was born in Scotland.

Hugh (McLeman) MacLeman was born on 20 August 1870 in Cromarty, Scotland.^{[1] [2]} He was the son of John McLeman and Isabella (Watson) McLeman.

By 1881 Hugh was a scholar and resided at 4 Shore Street in the coastal town of Cromarty along with his parents and 8 siblings^[3]. His father was working as a fishcurer.

In 1891 Hugh was living with his parents and 5 siblings at 7 Shore Street, Cromarty ^[4]. He was employed as a fisherman, as was his younger brother. Their father, John is earning his living as a fishcurer, and is known to be an employer.

Hugh married Williamina Finlayson in 1892 in Cromarty ^[5]. Williamina was the daughter of another local fishing family.

Hugh and Williamina had six children, Margaret (1892)^[6], Isabella (1895)^[7], John (1896)^[8], William (1899)^[9], Anne (1900)^[10] and Violet (1902)^[11].

7 Shore Street, Cromarty was still the family home in 1901^[12], where Hugh and Williamina were living with 4 of their children, William having died in infancy (1899)^[13]

By 1911 Williamina had moved and was now living at 65 Big Vennel, Cromarty with two of her younger children, John and Violet^[14]. Anne had died in 1902^[15]. Hugh was, at the time of the 1911 census, onboard the 'SS Briton', a fishing vessel harboured in the fish market in Aberdeen. He was employed as 2nd Mate and was engaging in sea fishing.^[16].

Hugh and Williamina were still living at 65 Big Vennel, Cromarty in 1921 along with their two adult children, John and Violet^[17]. Hugh is now a ship owner and also has coal merchants business. John would appear to be working for his father as a seaman. Violet is employed as an apprenticed tailoress and Williamina is occupied looking after the family home.

Hugh died in Cromarty in 1924, aged 54.^[18] and was buried in Cromarty Easter Burial Ground. ^[19]

Research Notes

Last Name at Birth was wrong on the profile. The LNAB has been verified against ScotlandsPeople and it should be McLeman. The original LNAB was spelt MacLeman^[1]

The ScotlandsPeople index confirms a marriage between Hugh McLeman and Williamina Finlayson in 1892, however the actual date of marriage hasn't been confirmed.

Hugh's father also appears to have an incorrect LNAB.

In the 1921 Census Hugh, Williamina and their family are recorded with the surname 'MacLeman'. Details also confirm that Williamina had 6 children, 4 of which were still alive in 1921.

Hugh's death certificate index record has his last name recorded as 'MacLeman'. It's the correct reference as the record has the mother's maiden name recorded as 'Watson'.^[18]

Hugh is recorded as being buried in Cromarty Easter Burial Ground. There is no photo associated with the record. His spouse is recorded as Williamina Finlayson.
