It is with profound sorrow and deepest regret that we chronicle the death of another of Ottawa county's oldest and most highly esteemed citizens, Alexander McLean, of Logan township.
Mr. McLean was born in Ontario, Canada in 1847. He left his parental roof when about seventeen years of age, to make his way in the world. In 1868, he settled in this county, and took up a homestead on Pipe Creek, near the old Grove post office. Soon afterwards he was married to Miss Martha Hall. Eight children were born to this marriage, seven of whom are living. He was not only a very industrious, hard-working man, but was also a very successful business manager, and built up for himself and family a comfortable home, besides accumulating considerable other property. In 1886 he moved to California, in hopes that the change of climate might be beneficial to his health, which had been failing for some time. Regaining some of his former vigor, and still entertaining a feeling of partiality for the state where he and his faithful wife had fought the battle of life side by side, for so many years, he returned to Kansas and bought a farm in Logan township, where he resided until his death, which occurred Sunday, June 25th, 1899. The funeral sermon was conducted Monday, June 26th, by Rev. Cooper of Lamar, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Hall Cemetery. The funeral was conducted and directed by John Reafsnyder, who was one of the oldest and most intimate friends of the deceased. The pall bearers were C.D. Lavering, John Hogg, Sr., Wilson Bigbee, C.H. Osborne, Chas. Campbell and John Clutz.
Mr. McLean was one of Ottawa County's pioneers. He was one of the men who plowed corn with a revolver strapped to his belt on account of the Indians. He was a kind and loving father, a faithful affectionate husband, and a warm hearted and generous friend and neighbor. He left to his bereaved family a name which they can ever mention with reverence and pride; and of the departed, it will ever be a consolation to them to remember that he was a just and upright man, who sought to do his duty by all. All the friends and acquaintances join with the stricken family in mourning the loss of a good and true man who has gone to his reward.
