Biography

Elizabeth McLaughlin was born in probably Rye Township, then Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, about 1820 (assumes she was age 18 at marriage), the daughter of Daniel McLaughlin and his wife, Isabella Drummond. Elizabeth died in perhaps Williams County, Ohio, after 18 July 1842 (birth of child)[1] and before 5 January 1843 (husband married again).[2]

Elizabeth McLaughlin married in Williams County, Ohio, 18 September 1838, Adna Reynolds,[3] as his first wife.

In 1823,[4] before 17 November 1823 (date of deed),[5] her parents, Daniel and Isabella McLaughlin, moved their family from Rye Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania,[6] to Blooming Grove Township, Richland County, Ohio.[7]

Her father died at Richland County in 1828.[8] Isabella and the family remained at Richland County a short while. Isabella later removed along with most of the family to the area then Brady Township, Williams County, Ohio;[9] the place the family settled became part of Fulton County when it was formed in 1850.

In the mid 1830s, following Daniel's death, their son John and son-in-law Daniel Williams, with wife Mary, brought a partition action at Richland County, Ohio, to resolve some of Daniel's real estate. The court filings memorialize Isabella's name as Daniel's widow and their surviving children,

John McLaughlin, Daniel Williams and Mary his wife, vs Jane McLaughlin, Elizabeth McLaughlin, Joseph McLaughlin, Isabella Mc Laughlin and others

[Recorded ...]

Isabella's property sale to son John McLaughlin was dated 23 June 1836; it was witnessed by James Carrings and Wesley McLaughlin.[12] The latter was presumably otherwise Isabella's nephew, the eldest son of Anthony McLaughlin.

This colorful rememberance of Elizabeth (McLaughlin) Reynolds was first published in 1888,[13]

Elizabeth [McLaughlin], came in the winter of 1837, with the family of Samuel Ayers, to their new homes in this wilderness ... married Adna Reynolds. On that eventful day she did a washing in the morning, for the family, shelled, that morning also, one-half bushel of corn, and that afternoon carried it on her shoulder, through the woods, to Bird's mill, located on Mill Creek, north, got it ground, again re-shouldered and carried it home, baked the wedding cake, and was married the same evening. The distance to Bird's mill was at least two and one-half miles, making five miles to and from, for the lady to travel. This was in the fall of 1838.

Family

Adna and Elizabeth (McLaughlin) Reynolds were the parents of at least one child,

  1. George Carpenter Reynolds, born in Stryker, Williams County, Ohio, 18 January 1842, died there 12 July 1909;[14] married in Williams County, 8 October 1862, Mary E. Ramsey.[15]
