Biography

McGill, John (1746-1797), merchant, was born in 1746, a son of James McGill, a merchant of Glasgow , Scotland, and a younger brother of James McGill, of Montreal. He came to Canada as early as 1770, for his name appears in the fur-trade licences of that date; and the date on his Beaver Club medal reveals the fact that he wintered in the Indian country in 1770. In 1773 he appears in the fur-trade licences as a partner of his brother James, and in 1774 as a partner of Charles Paterson. He became a member of the firm of Todd and McGill, and he died in Montreal on December 1, 1797. [1]
