Getting started with DNA outlines how to use your DNA test information on WikiTree and DNA is a link to a collection of links about WikiTree's many features involving DNA.

Your information will be propagated to the profiles of your parents and your ancestors within about 24 hours of being added. It will also propagate to the profiles of the descendants of your ancestors, so they may see your information under the heading "DNA Connections" just as you can see theirs.

The DNA Connections list on your profile will provide a visual way for you to find potential relatives on WikiTree who have also added their DNA test information. Using DNA tools at sites like GEDMatch.com, if you find a relative that matches your DNA sufficiently and you have genealogical sources for the intermediate relationships, you can mark the specific parental relationships back to the most recent ancestor that you both share as "confirmed with DNA." For details, guidance, and examples of how to properly document DNA confirmations, see DNA confirmation.

To get the best results, continue adding sourced profiles for your ancestors until you can connect to ancestors already in WikiTree. If you have exhausted what you know on one line, it can sometimes help to add what you know on another line. The more branches you are able to add the greater the likelihood of finding potential cousins to match with. The process of identifying which branch elements of DNA relate to will better enable you to find matches that relate to the particular branches you are researching.

If you have pre-1700's ancestors to add please read our Pre-1700 profiles info. Do you have Royal Ancestors? Rather than create duplicate profiles for them, please contact the EuroAristo Project to discuss connecting your family line to their profiles.

Don't forget to Head over to the G2G forum. and take a minute to introduce yourself in the Tree House or ask a question in any of the other categories. There's also a brickwall tag in the G2G forum: for that "special" ancestor who is eluding you.

My interest in History compelled me to interview my paternal grandfather, Fred McFadden, and my Great-Aunt Lavina Sjodin, one afternoon in 1968. Fred's remarkable memory of persons, dates, places and events sustained and propelled my research for a long time. I continue to search for information and connections to this day. I am happy to join wikitree to learn and to share what I have found. I am far from a professional in the field of genealogy, but am a happy wanderer through the internet, book stacks, boxes of photos, the cemetery and knocking on doors.

I am hoping the mt DNA I have posted will connect me with more relatives, with more stories, more photographs, and new friends. Life is full of happy surprises, and some of the best are through family connections.
