Biography
John was born on 6 June 1826, baptized on 17 June 1826 at Crieff, Perthshire. His parents were William McEwan and Ann Young.
(The surname is found as McEwan, McEwen and other variations but the McEwan spelling seems to have been preferred in this family.)
John McEwan became a Free Church minister. He married Mary Crawford and they had at least two children, a son, William Crawford McEwan, born in 1859 and a daughter, Margaret Steven McEwan, born in 1860, both at Ancrum, Roxburghshire.
John McEwan was shown in the 1881 UK census at Ancrum as "Minister of Ancrum Free Church". After that, positive identification is difficult because there were many people with the same name.
