Vol. 2, p. 137-138 "On Saturday last I had taken John McAll ister (Mrs
Harper's brother) out to the Carnegie Museum the re we read 2 letters
written to Gen James Jack before 1800 " 1 by Ephriam Blaine and one by
Neville B. Craig refferrin g to army orders = when we came home we were
telling the co ntents of the letters to Mrs Harper, whereupon she produce
d an old Scrap book kept by her mother containing the obitu ary of Mrs
Nancy Jack who died April 13 - 1858 at the resid ence of her son, Major
Joseph Jack near Pleasant Unity in t he 95th year of her age. It is
stated that her appearanc e indicated that she might have lived for years
had it no t been for a fall which caused her death. The obituary cov ers
two pages of the scrap book and is too long to copy ent ire. Her
descendants numbered in all 157 - 13 children - 7 2 grandchildren - and
71 great (great?) grandchildren - 10 0 were still living at her death"
her maiden name was McCoy - and she came from Virginia in the 11th year
of her ag e (2 years before Declaration of Independence). Her husban d
John Jack was dismissed from the army on account of a sev ere wound - but
being called as an officer in the Indian Wa r - carrying a musket ball in
his leg for 13 years and ofte n for more than 6 months his whereabouts
were unknown, bu t perhaps you know this all better than we can tell you
= n ow when we had been having all these back reminiscences - y our
letter arrived the same day, for your father Joseph Jac k is certainly
the son of this Nancy Jack - I send enclose d the obituary of Andrew Jack
possibly of the same line bu t we do not know the family. you will
excuse this hasty sk etch - with our kind regards, I am respectfully

3/4 by 11 in showing by the handwrite that it wa s written by a man well
up in years & enclosed in an envelo pe directed to Mr S.S. Jack 461

Vol. 2, p. 159-160: "Nancy McCoy....was born in ______ Co . Virginia in
1764 or 1765 and removed with her parents t o a farm near Middle Church
in Mt. Pleasant Township, Westm oreland County, Pa......She was married
to John Jack and th ey at once went to their cabin home on the headwaters
of th e Sewickly in the same Township. She survived her husban d 43
years. After the death of her husband she had the man agement of a large
farm and the care of a large family of c hildren and grandchildren."
