Sally's family was involved in the Hatfield and McCoy Feud. This was a long drawn out series of altercations, all of which must have grieved Sally. The one that is reported to have contributed to her death occurred on January 1, 1888.

Sally and Randall's house was burning to the ground and their family was attacked as they tried to escape. Her son, Calvin, was killed in the shootout. Her daughter, Alifair, was shot to death as she tried to flee the burning house. Sally was badly injured when she attempted to comfort Alifair, suffering several broken ribs and skull fractures. Though Randall and the rest of his family were able to retreat into the woods, they suffered frostbite because they were not prepared for the cold.[3]

Sally died before 1899 (see Research Notes).

She is buried in Dils Cemetery in Pike County, Kentucky.[4]

There is strong evidence to suggest that Sally died much later than we thought. In November of 1898, a D.B. Marrs motioned the Pike County Court to appoint an administrator for "the estate of Sarah McCoy deceased". The court appointed the Pike County Sheriff as the administrator. In addition, Randall McCoy only remarried in July of 1899. These two facts seem to imply Sarah/Sally died in 1898. Considering that there appear to be no other Sarah McCoys who match these circumstances in the area, there is a strong case here that Sally is this Sarah McCoy and died around 1898.

Here is the link to that court record: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSRK-497J-S?i=265&cat=129530

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. At this time Sally's death certificate has not been located, but as you noted she passed away before November 1898. Unfortunately there is no death date on her tombstone. Most articles on Sally reference the Find A Grave memorial as the source for her death date of 1890, although there is no evidence on the memorial for that date. Without a specific date, we should update the death date to state she passed away sometime before November 1898.

Getting confused. This has sally as Samuels daughter. The wife of his brother Randolph. That would be Uncle and neice marriage. Not 1st cousins like history says ?

Sarah is the daughter of Samuel David McCoy (abt.1782-1855). Her father Samuel's brother is Daniel Effort McCoy (1790-1885), whose son Randolph McCoy Sr (1825-1914) is Sarah's husband and her first cousin.

Hello Tom,

Please consider changing the privacy level of this profile to Open considering the dates of birth & death. Thanks, Cindy Williams Lesure

McCoy-4092 and McCoy-542 appear to represent the same person because: These profiles are the same person with the same spouse. The dates of birth are off, but it still seems feasible these are the same. Review & merge as appropriate. Please notate reasons in public comments if merge is rejected.
