Biography

William was born in 1750-1756 in 1756 Craven County, North Carolina -- or perhaps in Virginia or Maryland.[1][2][3]
In October 1774, he seems to have served as a Captain in Capt. Robert McClenachan's Company of Volunteers from Botetourt County at the Battle of Point Pleasant in Lord Dunmore's War.[4][5] an Ancestry hint of 5 Dec 2019 says he's in the Maryland Revolutionary War records.
On 16 Aug 1781 William married Joanna Payne in Bedford County. VA[6], with Frail Payne, brother of Joanna, giving his consent[7] and Littlebury Hurt giving surety. William and Joanna had at least ten children:
  1. Mary McCoy
  2. Thomas McCoy
  3. Nancy McCoy
  4. John Paine McCoy
  5. Joanna McCoy
  6. Zilpha McCoy
  7. Elizabeth H. McCoy
  8. Leatha McCoy
  9. Jubal McCoy
  10. William McCoy
He appears on tax lists in Bedford County, Virginia, in 1782, with 1 free male over 21, 0 slaves, 0 horses, 3 cattle, 1 tithe over 16[8]
About 1822 he migrated to Breckinridge County, Kentucky, and was living there in 1828.[9][10]
In 1835 he gave 100 acres to Joanna and Barton Nichols for "kind attention & consideration during his illness," and says he's of Bedford County, Virginia.[11]
Apparently, William could not write. He signed court records with an "X."[12]
He died in Bedford County before 27 Nov 1835[13][14]

Note: I saw your 5 Feb 2001 posting on the Genealogy.com McCoy Genealogy Forum regarding Ann MCCOY. Also another posting in 2000 about Thomas STUMP and his relationship to William MCCOY. I can't remember if I have contacted you before, but these are people that I am also researching. My husband's MCCOY line goes back to William MCCOY, born about 1756 in VA or MD. I am a member of a mailing list that is researching William MCCOY in particular but also welcomes other MCCOY genealogists. We think that the parents of our William MCCOY were William and Ann(a) MCCOY. We think after William senior died, Anna married John STUMP (son of Thomas STUMP) since he was on the marriage bond as step-father of Anna MCCOY's daughter, Margaret MCCOY. We think that William MCCOY, Jr., was a brother of Margaret. We also think that there was a brother, John, who married the sister (Sarah) of William MCCOY's wife,JJoanna PAYNE. Convoluted, isn't it?
I was wondering if you had had any success with these investigations? We are at a brickwall as to definitely tying William to William and Anna or finding anything out about William and Anna earlier than the 1750s. We just have pieces to the puzzle. Can you be of any help?

Va - 8 Aug 1845 Breckinridge Co KY) and Susanna Kennedy are my ancestors. John Paine McCoy's parents are William McCoy ( 1756 Craven Co, NC - 27 Nov 1835 Bedford Co VA) and Joanna Payne (29 Apr 1761 Bedford Co. VA - ?). According to records I have been able to find, William's parents are believed to be a Willis McCoy born about 1737 Fauquier Co, VA and married about 1755 to Mrs. Cornelius Kesiah in Craven Co NC. This is from PAYNE AND ASSOCIATED FAMILIES OF BRECKINRIDGE CO, KY by Norman Payne. In reference to the information, he says it is unproven, but the best he was able to find, from research of Sylvia Jensen, Riverton, Utah, on file Church of Latter Day Saints, Salt Lake City, Utah. Batch F867045, sheet 44. Other than this info, I have hit a road block at this same spot.
