Research Note

We have not found any records that identify Nancy's parents, and it's not known whether she had any siblings. In the early 1800s, however, it was very common for young adults to choose a mate from among the grown children of other families living in the same immediate area. So we note in the U.S. 1820 Census record for Jacob Buhrman's father, Henry Poorman, in Election District 5 of Frederick County, MD, that there were two McClain families living nearby and listed on the same census page. One of them, the family of Joseph McClain, had a daughter in Nancy's age bracket, as well as four other younger children. Joseph McClain therefore might be a possible candidate to have been Nancy's father. He would not be the same Joseph McClain of Frederick County, MD who is profiled in this data base and identified as McClain-440, however.
