Cormac McCarthy was an American Pulitzer Prize winning author, known for his unique writing style. Cormac wrote fiction novels in the western and postapocalyptic genres.[1]

Charles Joseph McCarthy was born on July 20, 1933 in East Providence, Rhode Island, son of Charles Joseph McCarthy and Gladys Christina McGrail.[1][2][3][4]

In 1937, the family moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, where Cormac attended Catholic schools.[1]

From 1951-1952, Cormac attended the University of Tennessee, but left in 1953 to enlist in the United States Air Force.[1] In 1956, Cormac re-enrolled but left without taking a degree.[1]

Cormac (27) married a fellow student from the University of Tennessee, Peggy Lee Holleman (21) (born in 1939 in Hickory Ridge, Arkansas; daughter of Eugene Joseph Holleman and Vivian Burton) in 1961.[1] They moved to Asheville, North Carolina, then divorced in 1962.[1]

Cormac won the 1965 William Faulkner Foundation Award for his first novel, "The Orchard Keeper"[5]

In 1966, Cormac married Anne De Lisle in Hampshire, England.[1][6] The couple moved back to the United States, living in Tennessee for ten years.[1] Cormac and Anne divorced in 1981.

In 1992, Cormac married Jennifer Claire Winkley. They remarried on 2 February 2002 in Carson City, Nevada.[7] Cormac and Jennifer divorced in 2006[1]

Cormac's father, Charles, died in 1995, in Florida and his mother, Gladys, died in 1997, in New Jersey.[8][9]

Cormac died on June 13, 2023, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, aged 89.[1][10][11]
