Biography

George Sidney McCall was born in Austin, Texas, on January 20, 1926, died on January 31, 2008. He was the only child of Sid and Zelma Prewitt McCall.

George attended Austin schools and graduated from Austin High School in 1943. In high school, he was a member of the Austin State Championship football team of 1942. At age 18, he joined the U.S. Naval Air Corps. Ranked second in his flight school, he received his wings and was preparing for aircraft carrier duty when peace was declared. George loved the Navy and flying and stayed in the Naval Reserve, retiring as a Lt. Commander.

In 1946, George returned to the University of Texas where he was a four year Letterman on the Longhorn Football team, playing alongside Bobby Layne, Tommy Landry and "Rooster" Andrews. He had treasured memories of playing in the Cotton, Sugar, and Orange Bowls for the Longhorns. He was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and The Cowboys Service Organization.

After receiving his business degree, he joined McCall-Hibler Insurance Agency in Austin. He later became a partner and the firm added a third owner and became McCall- Hibler-Allen.

George was an avid and talented golfer who won many local and state tournaments. He devoted much time after retirement to the Texas Golf Association and the U.S. Golf Association. He was a director of the TGA and served as President in 1994 and 1995. He was a longtime member of the Austin Country Club and served as President in 1964 and 1975. He was chosen "Sportsman of the Year in 2001". In 2005, George was awarded the first "Bob Wells Award for Outstanding Contributions to Amateur Golf in Texas" by the Texas Golf Association.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Beverly Coleman McCall^[1]; daughters Mary M. Scherer and husband David of Clearwater, Florida, Claudia M. Boze and husband George of Chillicothe, Illinois; son Shawn C. McCall and wife Becky of Spring, Texas; and grandsons Matthew Coleman McCall and Benjamin Michael McCall of Spring.
