Robert joined the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War right out of high school. He spent two tours on duty as a Radioman. He always had a love for electronic machines which later led him to working with computers.
He attended California State University of Sacramento where he played football, was on the diving team, and got a degree in computer science. He later became professor of computer science there in a day when computers were new to the world.
He and his friend coauthored the book IBM Assembler: An Intuitive Approach
"Text for a sophomore course that uses an IBM mainframe computer. Follows structured programming techniques and explains the motivation behind the implementation of assembly instructions in terms of computer organization. Introduces each language statement by explaining the reason behind its implementation and discusses how the instruction forms a component of the language. Covers the essential tools, including subprograms, of structured programming. Uses numerous examples to describe input/output instructions, addressing memory, Job Control Language, and more."[1]
In the 1980s he moved his family to Austin, Texas where he worked as a computer science researcher in the field of AI. He worked for both Lockheed and NASA.
At 6 foot 2, Robert was tall and muscular, like his Scottish and Norwegian ancestors. This allowed him to excel at sports. In addition to football and swimming, he also played volleyball and baseball. He was often found on local beaches playing beach volleyball.
Robert won many trophies for wins during pool tournaments (also known as billiards). He loved hanging out anywhere that had a pool table.
As a hobby, he was a portrait painter, painting in oils, and a photographer. He also loved, of course, all things computer related.
