David Ewan "Dave" McArtney, the son of Robert and Gloria (née Moss) McArtney, was born on 5 April 1951 in Oamaru, New Zealand.[1][2]
A founding member of New Zealand rock band Hello Sailor, Dave was the songwriter and singer of "Gutter Black," one of the band's most well known songs. Hello Sailor achieved great success in their home country with their debut album being the first New Zealand album to be certified gold. Unfortunately, the group was unable to achieve further success and collapsed around 1978, apparently after a disastrously unsuccessful attempt at becoming successful overseas.[3][4]
The end of Hello Sailor was not the end of Dave's musical career. Not long after the band fell apart, he formed Dave McArtney and The Pink Flamingos. After the release of their debut album, the band won five prizes at the 1981 New Zealand Music Awards. However, following lackluster performance of their second album in 1982, Dave dissolved the band. He was involved with a few more musical projects in the following years such as production and soundtrack work as well as occasional reforms of both Hello Sailor and Dave McArtney and The Pink Flamingos.[3][4]
In the early 1990s he moved to Bavaria, Germany, with his partner, though he eventually returned to New Zealand to work as a music tutor at the Music and Audio Institute of New Zealand as well as to create a solo album, which was released in 2003.[3][4] During his life, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a major in renaissance poetry[5] as well as a Master of Arts shortly before his death.[3]
Dave passed away of liver cancer on 16 April 2013 at his home in Point Chevalier, Auckland, New Zealand.[2][4][6][7] He was cremated at the city's Purewa Crematorium on 24 April.[2][7]
Dave's birth record is not publicly accessible and no online sources list his parents but they are presumed to be Robert and Gloria McArtney as they were the only McArtneys recorded in electoral rolls as living in Oamaru around the time of his birth. Gloria's obituary also mentions a deceased son named David which matches up as he predeceased her by four years.

We plan on featuring Dave alongside Eddie van Halen, the Example Profile of the Week, in the Connection Finder on December 2nd. Between now and then is a good time to take a look at the sources and biography to see if there are updates and improvements that need made, especially those that will bring it up to WikiTree Style Guide standards. We know it's short notice, so don't fret too much. Just do what you can. A Team member will check on the profile Tuesday and make changes as necessary.
Thanks! Abby
