Biography

Hubert Blackman Mavay was born in 1915 in Tangan, Queensland, Australia. He was the son of William Mavay and Sarah Dick. ^[1]

Served in the Second Australian Imperial Force 1939-1948
2/1st Australian Infantry Battalion

On 3rd November 1939 Hubert enlisted in the Second Australian Imperial Force and was allocated to the 2/1st Australian Infantry Battalion, a unit of the 16th Brigade and its parent 6th Division. He embarked with the battalion for the Middle East and served in its successful North African campaign and disastrous Greece-Crete campaign. During garrison duties in Syria in winter 1941-42 he was the Pioneer Platoon Sergeant. He would later serve on the Kokoda Track, and in the Aitape-Wewak campaign on the north coast of New Guinea, having been commissioned as a Lieutenant and appointed platoon commander of A Company. He was demobilised following the war, on 16th October 1948. ^[2] Following the war he was awarded the campaign and service medals: 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star, Pacific Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945 and Australia Service Medal 1939-1945.

Hubert married Margaret Eastway in 1942 in Sydney, New South Wales whilst home on leave (between North Africa-Greece-Crete and Papua-New Guinea). ^[3]
