Biography

Sarah (Maude) Manners was born in County Durham, England.

Sarah Maude was born in the town of Darlington in 1835 and was baptised in St Cuthbert's, Darlington, on 27 December 1835. She was the daughter of William and Elizabeth Maude.^[1]

Sarah married John Manners in Durham in 1865 and they had eight children.^[2]

On the 1871 census, John, a locomotive driver, and Sarah are living at 3 Maple Cottage, Brancepeth, with their children: Elizabeth (5 years), Thomas (3 years) and John (1 year). They also have a house servant, Hannah Graham, aged 14 years.^[3]

On the 1881 census, John, a railway engine driver, and Sarah are living at 3 Maple Cottage, Brancepeth, with their children: Elizabeth (15 years), Thomas (13 years), John (11 years), Robert (9 years), Sarah (6 years), Edward (4 years), Joseph (3 years) and Maude (11 months). Sarah's father, William Maude, a retired engineer, is also living with them.^[4]

On the 1891 census, Sarah, now a widow, is living at 55 New Row, Stockley, with her children: John (21 years), Robert (19 years), Sarah (16 years), Edward (14 years), Joseph (12 years) and Maud (10 years). John is a colliery fireman, while Robert and Edward are general labourers. Sarah's father, William Maude, is also still with them.^[5]

On the 1901 census, Sarah is living at 55 New Row, Stockley, with her son, John, aged 31 years, who is now head of the household. Sarah's two daughters, Sarah, aged 26 years, and Maud, aged 20 years, are living with them along with Sarah's father, William Maude.^[6]

On the 1911 census, Sarah is living at 12 Clarence Terrace, Willington, with her daughters, Sarah, aged 36 years, and Maud, aged 30 years. Maud is a school mistress. Sarah's granddaughters, Ethel and Maud Strickland, both drapery shop assistants, are living with them. The record also shows Sarah was married for forty-six years and gave birth to eight children, although one is deceased.^[7]

Sarah Maude died, aged 78 years, in 1914.^[8]
