Biography

Charles was born on December 23, 1855. He passed away at 70 years of age on February 5, 1926. [1]

He lived with his parents George Matthews and Margaret (Dalzell) Matthews in Allegheny City (now Pittsburgh's North Side) [2] [3]

Charles married Jeanette (Jennetta) C. McGuire, a 22 year old from Blairsville, PA on November 7, 1882 [4] They were married in Allegheny City, PA in the Arch Street Methodist Church by Reverend Latshaw McGuire who was the pastor there from 1880-1883. [5]

Charles and Jeanette had two children, George Howard Matthews [6] and Anna Elizabeth "Bessie" Matthews [7]

Charles was working for the Pittsburgh Reduction Company (now the Aluminum Company of America, aka Alcoa) and moved from Allegheny City to New Kensington, PA when the company set up shop there. [8]

Jeanette passed away in New Kensington, PA on October 5, 1898.

Charles then married Minnie Ellen Hicks on December 7, 1899 [9] and in 1900 the family was renting a house on Second Avenue in New Kensington, PA. [10] Charles and Minnie parented George Howard and Anna Elizabeth and had three children of their own, a daughter Nellie [11] who died young, Charles Clyde [12], and Hazel Viola.

In 1910 Charles and family were renting a house on Fourth Avenue in Parnassus Borough (which became part of New Kensington in a 1931 merger). [13]

In 1913 Charles was honored by Alcoa for 25 years of service. He would ultimately work there for 37 years. [14]

In 1920 Charles and family were renting a house at 1242 Taylor Avenue in New Kensington [15]

Charles Find A Grave page [16]

Charles was mentioned after his death as Clyde's father in his 1932 marriage record [17] and as George Howard's father in a 1936 Social Security record [18]

Research Notes

Charles had a first cousin named Charles Wesley Matthews born six months before him on June 10, 1855 to William Irwin Matthews and Anna Jane Robb in Perry Township, Clarion County, PA.

So just a heads up to proceed with extra care to detail to not confuse the two Charles Wesley Matthews living in Western PA about the same time.
