Maud was born in 1868.[1] She was the daughter of George Masson and Elizabeth Plumb. While she used her first name Maud in her early years she later began using her middle name Elizabeth. Elizabeth was a professor from Canada when she married Sidney Lanier Jr. in Cambridge in 1902. They lived in Eliot, Maine, near the border with New Hampshire where Sidney had a farm school. The couple had three children, Sterling, David and John, who used the name Jonah. After her husband died in 1918, Elizabeth remained in Eliot. In 1924 she traveled to Europe for eight months (Passport application granted 26 Sept 1924). In 1930 she opened the Sidney Lanier Camp on her property in Eliot, with cultural activities planned in addition to the more traditional summer camp fare. The camp operated for eight weeks every summer during the 1930's. Elizabeth lived to age 92 and died in hospital in nearby Portsmouth in 1961.
