Biography

Robert Martin is an Anzac who served in World War One.

Robert Patrick Wright Martin was born on 13th September 1887 in Riemore, Tamborine, Queensland (Australia). He was the third son of Scottish emigrants Robert Martin and Jeannie Tait. [1]

On 3rd January 1916, upon hearing of the successful evacuation of the Gallipoli Peninsula, Robert enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force, the young nation's overseas expeditionary force. [2] Along with others among the 13th reinforcements for the 26th Australian Infantry Battalion, he embarked aboard HMAT Seang Choon A49 at Brisbane on 4th May 1916. [3]

Corporal Robert Martin was wounded at Belgium during The Great War.
Upon joining the battalion in the trenches of the Western Front, Robert was allocated to B Company. He attained the junior non-commissioned rank of Corporal by early 1917. On 14th April 1917 he was admitted to the Kitchener Military Hospital with gunshot wounds to the face; he had been shot through the bridge of his nose at eye level. He was discharged from hospital and rejoined his unit in late June or early July [4]

Just three weeks after turning 30 years of age, on 4th October 1917, Robert was killed in action during the Third Battle of Ypres in Zonnebeke, Flanders, Belgium. [5] He had been carried to the dressing station by another soldier in his company. He died very shortly afterward and was buried beside the dressing station. [4]

Robert Patrick Wright Martin's name is located at panel 108 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra, at Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium, and on the Cenotaph at Beaudesert, Queensland. [6]
