Deborah Mary Martin was born on 13 August 1953 in Griffith, New South Wales, Australia. She is the eldest child of Willliam Alexander Martin and Joan Parsons, who had four children (all still living). She grew up on a fruit orchard where her father grew oranges, apricots and peaches and her mother was an infants teacher. Deborah attended Lake Wyangan Public School from Infants to grade 5.
In 1962 Deborah's family sold the farm and moved to Canberra where her. Deborah attended North Ainslie Primary School for grade 6, Campbell High School for first year of high school, and then Deakin High School for second year to sixth year. She received a Higher School Certificate in 1969. Her parents built a house in Curtin, Australian Capital Territory, Australia.
Deborah studied Economics at the Australian National University and was a member of the university choral society (SCUNA). She moved out of home and lived in a share house with other students. She worked part time as a copy boy at The Canberra Times and in various other casual jobs After she dropped out of university she completed a secretarial course at Canberra TAFE and was employed in the Attorney-General's Department as a secretary.
In 1975 Deborah transferred to the newly established Family Court of Australia in Adelaide. She went back to university, this time undertaking a Bachelor of Arts majoring in psychology and anthropology, and completed her degree in 1979. From 1977 to 1989 she lived with Robin L. and his son Dylan L. in Adelaide.
Deborah rejoined the Australian Public Service in 1980, commencing as an Employment Officer in the Commonwealth Employment Service and moving into the training section.
In 1989 Deborah was promoted to State Training Manager for the Northern Territory, and lived in Darwin from 1989 to 1994. Her partner during this time was Ivan.
In 1995 she became Manager of the Commonwealth Employment Service Office in Kununurra, Western Australia. Her partner during this time was Gilbert C.
When the Commonwealth Employment Service closed down in 1997 Deborah moved to Sydney and worked for Employment National, a government-owned business enterprise, from 1998 to 2003, as a human resources consultant and National Training Manager. Her position was made redundant in 2003 when Employment National closed. In 2002 she met Peter G and is still with him in 2023.
From 2003 to 2008 Deborah worked for Novartis Animal Health Australasia Pty Ltd, a Swiss-owned pharmaceutical company. She was Personal Assistant to the R & D Manager.
Deborah retired from paid employment in 2008. In retirement she volunteered with several organisations. She was a rescuer, rehabilitator and trainer with WIRES (NSW Wildlife Information Rescue and Education Service) until 2023. She trains seniors to use technology, first with Parramatta Computer Pals for Seniors until 2022 and then Computer Pals for Seniors the Hills from 2022. She sang with Circular Keys Chorus from 2000 to 2023 and currently sings with Valley Voices.
