Poland During Jacob's Time

The Duchy of Warsaw was a polish state established by Napoleon I in 1807 from the Polish lands ceded by the Kingdom of Prussia under the terms of the Treaties of Tilsit. The Kingdom of Poland was re-established in 1815 after Napeolean's defeat against Russia and the Congress of Vienna divided The Duchy of Warsaw, it was also knows as "Russian Poland." It became part of the Russian Empire in 1867.[3][4][5]

Research

  • Mt. Zion Cemetery
    • Jacob's daughter, son-in-law and son-in-law's parents are all buried at Mt. Zion.
    • There are five men buried at Mt. Zion with the name Jacob Marks. Years of death are 1901, 1910, 1918, 1931, 1942.
    • If Jacob was 91 in 1910, per the census, then he didn't die in 1901 and it's unlikely he lived until 1931 or 1942. The likely candidates were buried in 1910 and 1918.
    • Per Monica at Mt. Zion Cemetery, the burial cards have the following information:
      • Jacob Marks, burial date 1 January 1910, 67 years old, lived at 130 Wadsworth Avenue
        • Since the census was taken mid-year 1910, it's unlikely this is not likely to be the right Jacob Marks
        • 130 Wadsworth Avenue exists in Washington Heights, Long Island, and Staten Island.
      • Jacob Marks, burial date 19 April 1918, 73 years old, lived at 189 Division
        • 189 Division Street no longer exists as Division was divided in half in 1899 and replaced by Seward Park.[6]
        • Division Street was the center of Jewish culture at the time of Jacob's life, though now it is China Town.
        • TODO: Look into Eldridge Street Synagogue, build in 1887, but restored recently.[6]
