Biography

Nunzio Mannina is born 19 May 1874 in Corleone, the son of Cosimo Mannina and Bernarda Gariffo. He is baptized the next day. His godfather is Salvatore Addamo.[1]

On the SS Manilla, sailing from Palermo on 17 September 1903 and arriving in New Orleans, these passengers from Corleone:

14. Nunzio Mannina, 28 (b. 1875), single, going to Killona, LA, joining his cousin, Leoluca d’Antoni; his sister and brother are in lines 20-21

15. Francesca Paola Nigliazzo, 24 (b. 1879), married, going to Donaldsonville, LA, joining her uncle Bernardo Mistritta; connected with a bracket to lines 16-7

17. Leoluchina Tamburello, 15 (b. 1888)

18. Giuseppe Jannazzo, 39 (b. 1864), married; going to his brother in law Vincenzo Cappuleri in Prat City (may be Pratt City, AL, a section of Birmingham)

19. Matteo Mistritta, 15 (b. 1888), going to his brother Biagio in Patterson, LA

20. Liboria Mannina, 23 (b. 1880), single, going to her uncle Luciano Gariffo in Killona, LA, connected to line 21 with a bracket

23. Calogero d’Antoni, 25 (b. 1878), single, meeting brother in law Calogero Marino in Ramos, LA

24. Domenico Villarant, 20 (b. 1883), single, as a line through his name, was going to brother in law Salvatore Birtone in Patterson, LA [2]

In the spring of 1906, Nunzio's brother-in-law, Carmelo lo Jacono, a carter, intends to emigrate and join Nunzio in Hattiesburg, MS. Carmelo does not sail on this voyage.[3]

There is a possible match for Nunzio living with a brother in the 1910 federal census. "B" may be "Biagio," traveling in the same group with Nunzio, on line 21.

B. and N. Mannina, ages 24 (b. 1886) and 36 (b. 1874), both from Italy, emigrated in 1902, share a household in Iberville Parish, LA in the 1910 census. They are both merchants: B. is a retail merchant on his own account and N. is employed as a salesman of general merchandise.[4]

Nunzio is allegedly a soldier in the New Orleans crime family who later transfers to the San Francisco crime family.[5] The membership charts on Bill Feather's website confirm this.[6]

Nunzio Mannina (“Nunizo Mannino”) applies for a passport on 28 June 1923. He was born in Italy on 18 May 1874, son of Cosimo Mannino, who is deceased. Nunzio emigrated from Palermo in September 1903 and has lived in New Orleans continuously since then. He was naturalized on 12 April 1920. Nunzio is a salesman. He plans to visit Italy: hard to read first part of the reason but after it says “and for health.”

Nunzio is described as 49 years old, 5’6”, with a medium forehead, brown eyes, prominent nose, moustached mouth, round chin, black hair, dark complexion, and an oval face, and missing the thumb from his left hand.

He is identified by Lawrence Mangano, a New Orleans resident, who has known him for 15 years. He is a merchant living at 520 St. Philip St., NOLA.

His picture appears with this application. He has his passport sent to him at 1034 Louisiana Av., NOLA.[7]

In the 1930s, Nunzio moves to San Francisco, California.[5][8]

In 1937, Nunzio kills his son-in-law, Thomas Argyris, after remonstrating him for beating Nunzio's daughter, Thomas' wife, so severely she requires hospitalization. He is later freed from the murder charge.[5]

Death of Nunzio

Nunzio dies on 6 August 1962 in Sacramento, California.[9] He is buried in Saint Mary's Catholic Cemetery and Mausoleum in Sacramento.[10]
