Biography

Caution: There are two distinct Pre-1700 colonial progenitors of the Maltby, Maltbe, Maulsby, etc. family lines:

  • William John (Maltby) Maltbe Sr. (1665-1669)]] of Orston & Eastwood, Nottinhamshire, England & Philadelphia, Pennsylvania This Profile
  • William Maltby Esq. (1645 - abt. 1709)of East Redford, Nottinghamshire, England & Branford, New Haven, Connecticut

Caution: Explanation about the profile's (conflated) middle name of John: In some secondary sources there is a given (first) name mix up between father William and son John. Primary sources (vital records generated during the person's life-time) are clear that William had no middle name but secondary sources inadvertently assign the children of William to his son John consequently people relying solely upon the secondary sources confuse William with John. Both men married a woman named Mary so there's no obvious way for these descendants to see this conflation error unless they are also examining the primary sources and making a reconciliation betwen the two. Thus, many online family tree's confuse the father's name (William) with the son's name (John) or use the name William John Maltby.
Primary sources call him William Maltby of Orston, Nottinghamshire and later Eastwood.

  • Chesterfield/Derbyshire, Nottingham, England MM marriage intention record 13th d. 4th mo. (June) 1689: William MALTBE of Orston, County Nottingham & Mary ROADES of Ripley, County Darby.
  • Chesterfield, Derbyshire/Nottingham, England MM marriage record 9th d. 9th mo. (Nov) 1689 : William MALTBY of Orston, County Nottingham & Mary ROADES of Ripley, County Darby.
  • "Philadelphia (Arch St.) Monthly Meeting (MM) Births, Deaths & Burials, 1688-1826" record of "William & Mary MALTBY" of Eastwood, Nottingham Parish [England] and the recorded births of all 6 of their children: John, Mary, Elizabeth, William, Merchant, David

Secondary sources that mix up William with first born son John and then confuse additional life event facts based upon this initial conflation of names:

  • Hinshaw "Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol. II" p.394. Data indexed by Surname. "Surname MAULSBY, JOHN & MARY MALTBY'" ' Note all 6 children Henshaw attributes to John & Mary Maltby are actually the 6 children of William & Mary Maltby as evidence by the birth dates which match those recorded in the Philadelphia MM register of births for William & Mary (Rhodes) Maltby. [1]
  • Family history author Cora M. (Patty) Payne of Linden, Iowa, who wrote "Genealogy of the Maulsby Family for Five Generations, 1699-1902", [Payne, p.7-8] also conflates William Maltby with son John. She appears to have relied upon the Hinshaw record which errored in naming the 6 children of William and Mary (Roades) Maulsby as being the children of John and Mary. In other words, Cora Payne's compilation picked up the Hinshaw error and represented John's brothers and sisters as his children. As evidenced in John's Will, the children of John & Mary (Woodward) Maultsby (aka Maulsby aka Maltby) were: John Jr., William, Hannah, Mary, and Sarah. Again, all five children are named with wife Mary, in the Will of John Maltby, Sr. son of William and Mary who were of Philadelphia, then Plymouth twp., then again Philadelphia, Penn. and lastly Bladen County, North Carolina. Postscript: After his five children were born in Plymouth John & Mary returned to Philadelphia in 1724 where he purchased a Ferry business. His Will was probated in Bladen, N.C. but administrative papers from Philadelphia, due to his Ferry business debt, tie him to both locations. Payne does not delve into this aspect of John's life. If she had had the time and resources to do so she would have seen her error in the naming of his children and then making inaccurate assumptions due to the mixup. Also note: Payne provides some useful original sources for various land deeds so her work should not be dismissed 'out of hand'. But, her work would have benefited if it had been performed in the computer age with access to digitized original vital records.

Birth

William Maltby was probably born about 1665 (give or take) at Orston, Nottinghamshire, England based upon his marriage in 1689, Nottinghamshire, England. [2] Due to the number of William Maltby's aka Maultbys, aka Maulsby surnames found in the Nottingham, Derby, York and Lincoln County areas his parents are deemed unknown at this time. It would take fairly extensive reconciliation between various English village parish records to sort out which Maltby family he came from althouth it's possible the answer could present itself by someone who has the time and requisite reconciliation skills. Although, because of the amount of time that has passed its more likely not enough records exist to confidently trace his ancestry.

Early Adulthood Sufferings
At his adulthood, based upon the following 'Sufferings' records, William and his Quaker neighbors were targeted as sanctioned by laws of the land for non-payment of religious tithes:

"The 28th day 3rd month 1676. For being at a peacable Meeting at Rowland Dabney's house, William Maulby of Orston had 7 Strike of Barley taken from him worth about 17s. by Warrant from Robert Thornton called Justice. Christopher Dent and Robert Wycam Informers, taken by William Dawson, constable and Hugh Lamb, Officer." [3] [3] [Barnard, p.34.]
1676 "Goods were taken from William Maulsby and two others valued at L1.15s.[3] [Barnard, p.34.]
In 1694 "William Maultby of Eastwood (Meeting) in the County of Nottingham had hay and a goose taken from him to the value of 5s by Peter Lollywell priest of the Towne aforesaid. [Barnard, p.34 quoting Gilbert Cope's "Sufferings of Friends of Derbyshire, beginning 1661"] [3] [Barnard, p.34.]
On 28th May 1676 "William Maultby of Orston was fined for a meeting held about the same Time at the house of Rowland Dabney, they took from Edward Richardson, of Kilverton, a Blacksmith, not only his Hay and Corn, but also his Bedding, his Children's apparel and even the working Tools and Utensils of his Trade, to the Value of L161. And from William Maultby, Robt. Bullivant and John Smith they took goods to the amount of L11.15s." [3] [Barnard, p.33-34]

Marriage and Children

The parishes of Orston, County Nottinghamshire and Eastwood, County Derbyshire are about 29 US miles (about 47 km) apart both being equidistant from the ancient town of Nottingham.

Marriage Intention: As recorded in the Chesterfield, Nottinghamshire Monthly Meeting: "Upon the 13th day of the 4th month [June] 1689 at our monthly meeting at _____ house William Maltbe of Orston in the County of Nottingham and Mary Roades of Ripley in the County of Darboy [Derby] tho having in good order declared their intention and we have unity with them...." Witnesses: John Roades ; Will Wooley ; Will Day ; Luke Rank ; Thomas Witbe ; Edward Dawes ; John Dawes ; Phillip Taylor ; Martha _____ ; Dorothy ______ ; Sarah Taylor ; Eliz Dennis ; Marg Farquor(?) ... [Note the translation of some of these names written in 17th c. script needs to be double checked although the majority of them appear correct.] [2]

Marriage: "William Maltby of Ors[t]on, County Nottingham and Mary Roades of Ripley in the County of Darby were married on the 9th day of the 7th month [September] 1689" as recorded in the Chesterfield Monthly Meeting, Nottinghamshire, England. [2]

Childrens Births: According to the primary source transcription of the Philadelphia (Arch Street) MM William and Mary (Roades) Maltby had the following children's births registered: [4] :

  1. John, b. 4th day 3rd mo. (May) 1690, Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, England [4] [5] [1] ; he purchased land in Plymouth settlement, Philadelphia County [13 miles from Phily] ; m. Mary Woodward, dau of Anthony ; 1724 relocated back to city of Philadelphia ; in later years he relocated to Bladen County, North Carolina where he d. abt 1757 his Will being probated in both Philadelphia County, Penn. & Bladen County, N.C.
  2. Mary, b. 7th day 1st mo. [Mar] 1692, Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, England [4] [1]
  3. Elizabeth, b. 25th day 10th mo. [Dec] 1694, Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, England[4] [1] ; m. Rees [Rhys] Williams 1714, Philadelphia; d. 13 Mar 1759, Chester County, PA.
  4. William, b. 18th day 10th mo. [Dec] 1695, Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, England [4] [1] ; m. Rose Rees, her sister Ellin Rees married Abraham Roades who was the 1st cousin of William Maltby/Maulsby
  5. Merchant, b. 7th day 11th mo. [Jan] 1698/9 at sea on the 'Bristol Merchant' [4] ; d. 21st day 10th mo. (Dec) 1770 [1]
  6. David, b. 20th day 1st mo. [Mar] 1699/1700, Philadelphia, Penn.[4] [1]

Pennsylvania Arrival

Their arrival date can be reasonably assumed as being in the year 1689 due to the birth of their son Merchant who was born at sea. Author Payne states the family arrived aboard the ship "Bristol Merchant".

Death

William "Maulsby" died the 14th day of Eighth month (October) 1699 as recorded in the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting. [6]

Probated Will His Will was dated the 11th day of the 6th month (August) 1699 and he names his children 'en masse', he also mentions his beloved wife Mary and he asks her brother Adam Rhodes "to be an Assistant". Mary's brother John Rhodes wrote his name in the Witness section and her brother Richard Roades along with William Philpot appraised the estate. [Philadelphia Wills, 1699, No. 4, Bood "B", 7.] His Will was proved 5th November 1699.

Research Notes

Caution his parents are unknown at this time: There is an unsourced Find-A-Grave record for a William Maltbe of Orston, Nottinghamshire, England who supposedly was born in 1640 and who died 1 November 1718. There is no gravestone image with this record. This record needs a validating primary source in order for it to be relied upon and/or assumed it belongs to the father of this profile.

Caution: Another William Maultby of Orston, Nottingham who, in 1699, was bound for seven years as an apprentice in London, England. This William Maultby couldn't have been a son of this profile because he would have been about nine years at most assuming his birth shortly after 1689 when this profile's subject was married.

At London, England an Indenture, with a term of seven years, between William "Maltby, son of William Maltby of Orston in the County of Nottingham and George Brough was agreed to on the twenty-fifth day of August 1699. [7]

Question: Did his widow remarry? There is a Philadelphia Monthly Meeting, Certificate of Removal from Haverford MM, 29th day 10th mo. (Dec) 1704, for David William. widower, who is to marry "Mary Malsby of Philadelphia" dated 11th day, 11th mo. (Jan) 1704. [8] Many online family tree's include this as a 2nd marriage record for Mary (Rhodes) Maltby.

Hello to Ron Floyd and Lee Hale, both on the profile's trusted list: Please forgive the last 24 hours of my editing where I updated both individual profiles for John Maulsby and William Maltby assuming they were two different men when in fact, after laying out each source for both profiles, it's clear that they were the same man who was named William and who had a son named John and both who were married to a Mary. So, as records get transcribed over the centuries and the whole family is being recorded for secondary source purposes, again, a transcriber picks up the name John instead of the name William and 'off we go'. If you have any questions about the final work I've done herein please don't hesitate to ask. Sincerely, Leigh Anne.
