John was born in 1918. He was the son of John H. Madison and Ethel Ann Naumann.[1]

John died in 2005.[2]

JOHN H. MADISON
ITHACA - John H. Madison died on February 13, 2005 at the age of 87, outside of Ithaca, New York. John was known as a colorful character, a lover of plants, and an early president of the Unitarian Church during his years in Davis, CA, from 1953 to 1980, and he leaves many relatives in Davis, CA.Born on the banks of the Mississippi, he shared his childhood between Burlington, Iowa, and Hartford, CT. He married Winifred Law in 1942. After spending 2 years in the US Army Air Corps, he graduated from Oberlin College. John and Winifred owned farms in Avon, CT, and Minerva, OH. Their third and final farm, a dairy farm in upstate NY, was lost to a fire. Shortly thereafter, John completed his PhD at Cornell University, and accepted a job at U.C. Davis where he was a professor in the department of Landscape Horticulture until his retirement in 1979. John's adventurous retirement years were spent in Gualala, CA, Australia, and Asheville, NC, and included travels to Egypt, Greece, Scotland, and the Amazon Basin. His final home was outside of Ithaca.He was passionate about growing plants and had a tireless knowledge of plant taxonomy. He was past president of the Mendocino Native Plant Society where he cataloged the rare collection of plants on Havens Neck, and published the local newsletter. He was also an accomplished woodworker whose works included carvings in his early years and furniture in his later years. He loved music and in his later years, loved to dance.He leaves behind his former wife, Winifred Madison of Davis, CA; daughter, Deborah Madison and husband, Patrick McFarlin of Santa Fe, NM; son, Michael Madison and wife, Dianne Madison of Davis, CA; daughter, Jamie Madison and husband, Manfred Kusch of Davis, CA; and son, Roger Madison and wife, Tara Watt of Davis, CA. His grandchildren are Miles Kusch of Portland, OR, and Lindsay Madison, Maia Madison, Julian Madison, and Marcus Madison, all of Davis, CA.John's family would like to express their deep appreciation of the loving care that he received from Penny and Larry Wilson throughout his long decline due to Alzheimer's disease. A private celebration of John's life will be held at a later date.[3]
