Sarah was born in 1822 at Cot(t)on[1][2], Shropshire, England and baptised on the 18th August 1822 at the chapelry of St. Mary the Virgin, Edstaston in the parish of Wem, Shropshire, England, the daughter of John Maddox[3] and Martha Maddox of Cotton.[4]

In 1851, Sarah was probably the Sarah Maddox (aged 28, b. 1823 Wem [sic]) occupied as a House Servant in the household of freeholder Daniel Boote and his wife Mary Ann Boote at Edstaston Hall, Edstaston, Shropshire.*

In 1851, Sarah's eldest sons Richard and Henry were staying with their maternal grandmother Martha Maddox at Cotton, Shropshire, England.[5]

In 1861, Sarah was a dairy maid and Edward Leek was a cow man, both living in the household of Farmer Abraham Ruscoe and his sister Sarah Ruscoe at Lacon, Shropshire, England.

On the 27th December 1864, Sarah Maddox of Edstaston married Edward Leek at Wem, Shropshire, England. Edward Leek, 42, bachelor, labourer of Wem, son of John Barnett (Wheelwright); and Sarah Maddox 48 [sic], spinster of Edstaston , daughter of John Maddox (labourer). Witnessed by Henry Davies and Eliza Boote.[3]

Sarah's husband Edward died aged 58 years in 1880 and was buried on the 14th October 1880 at St. Mary the Virgin, Edstaston, Shropshire, England.

Research Notes

She is NOT the Sarah Maddox who married James Louden on February 19, 1843, in Auckland, New Zealand and had five children during their marriage and who died as a young mother on June 25, 1854, in Auckland, New Zealand, at the age of 31, and was buried in Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand.

N.B. When son Richard married Ann Jones on the 18th October 1866 at Weston Lullingfield, he gave his father's name as Edward Leak.

Edward Leek or Barnett was born in 1822 and baptised on the 12th May 1822 at Wem, Shropshire, England, the son of William Barnett and Margaret Leek.

In 1851 there were two Sarah Maddox, both giving their birth place as Wem. The one at Edstaston Hall is the most likely, but the other (b. 1822 Wem) was a house servant at Creamore Mill, Wem, Shropshire, England, in the household of miller Thomas Jebb and his sister Eliza Jebb.
