Arthur was the youngest of ten known children. At the times of his birth, the family lived on the Lower East Side at 72 Norfolk. In 1905, Arthur and his family were living at 129 East 101st Street and he was attending school.[3]
By 1910, the family had moved to 5 West 132nd St. Arthur was 15 years old and working as an optician.[6] On the 3 July 1914, Arthur attempted to enter Ontario, Canada, but was rejected because restrictions had gone into place requiring US Citizens to carry a minimum of $25 with them and at the time he didn't have any money with him. Arthur continued working as an optician until he was about 20 years old.
In June 1917, Arthur registered for the draft in Detroit, Michigan. His physical description was recorded as medium build and medium height with gray eyes and dark brown hair. While he stated that he lived with his parents at 724 East 160th Street in The Bronx, he was working at the Westbrook Lunch restaurant in Detroit, Michigan.[4]
At the age of 22, Arthur enlisted in the United States Navy in New York in March 1918. At the time of his enlistment, he was single and was living with his parents in the Bronx. He went to training camp in Charleston, South Carolina. He then served as a Carpenter's mate for three months and then a Machinist's mate and was discharged as a Machinist's Mate 2nd Class on 12 December 1918 in New York.[7]
On 9 June 1925, Arthur was again rejected when trying to cross the border into Ontario on his way to Detroit. He was 29 at the time and was working as a Decorator. Although the record states that he was a stowaway, he was rejected due to newly implemented restrictions based on job type.
Arthur took his own life, at the age of 33, on 11 January 1930, in Cleveland. He was working as a salesman at the time. His body was found hanging in an abandoned building with a note stating the contributing factor was a nervous breakdown. Arthur's sister Celia provided the information for his death certificate and has his body returned to New York.[5][8][9] He was buried on 13 January 1930 at Mount Lebanon Cemetery in the Glendale neighborhood of Queens, New York. Celia and her husband Morris were later buried in the same plot.[10][11]
