Biography

The son of Frederick Forest Mackie (1865-1921) and Lenora Lillian Thompson (1883-1945), Charles Mackie was born in Key West, Florida[citation needed] in 1910, residing there with his family.[1] His father passed away in 1921 and in 1930, Charles lived in Key West with his mother and his sister, Mae, working there as a laborer.[2] In 1935, Charles lived in Key West with his sister, Florence Solomon, and her family.[3] His siblings included:

  1. Irma Mackie (1902-)
  2. Florence Edith Mackie (1904-1985)
  3. Edna M. Mackie (1909-2005)
  4. Mae Mackie (1914-)

Charles married Mary Angela Baldwin (1905-1973), the daughter of Joseph Henry Baldwin and Mariah Jane Peacon, marrying in Key West in 1937.[citation needed]

Charles registered for the World War II draft when he was 30, registering in Key West, Florida on November 27, 1940.[4] He stated that he lived at 112 Ann Street in Key West and that he worked for the United States Coast Guard, working as the First Assistant Lighthouse Keeper at the American Shoals Lighthouse in Key West. Charles was described as 6" tall and 158 pounds with brown hair and eyes, and noted that he had tattoos on each of his forearms. He changed his Military Occupational Specialty with the outbreak of World War II, beginning in the United States Coast Guard on July 18, 1941 as a Boatswain's Mate First Class, serving in both World War II and in the Korean Conflict. He was discharged on February 28, 1957.[5]

His marriage ended in divorce in 1949[6] and Charles remarried later that year, marrying Grace L. Connelly, about whom nothing is know, on April 20, 1949, after receiving their marriage license the same day.[7] The marriage did not last; in 1950, Charles lived alone at 524 Rose Lane in Key West, working for the Coast Guard.[8] Charles and Grace divorced in April of 1956.[9]

Charles remarried the next month, marrying Mary Thompson, about whom nothing is known, in May of 1956.[10] The marriage ended in divorce and Charles remarried his first wife in March of 1958.[citation needed] That marriage also ended in divorce and Charles married a fifth time, marrying Una (Hinde) Mackie, in Key West, Florida in April of 1964.[citation needed]

Charles Mackie passed away in Miami, Florida[11] at the age of 64[12] and is buried at Key West Cemetery.[13]
