Duncan McKellar was born on 5 Feb 1821, and was baptized in the Church of Scotland parish of Kilfinan on 29 Jul 1821. He was the lawfull son of Ellar McKellar and Anne McFarlane who were residing in Tighantara (sic) (most probably Tighnabruaich, a small village on the western shore of the Kyles of Bute).
Duncan was a fisherman who in 1841 at the time of the Census[1] was living with his family, including his father Ellar and mother Ann and brother Alexander (Ellar and Alexander were also fishermen) at Blairs Ferry, about 1½ miles south of Tighnabruaich.
Duncan, aged about 25 years, married Elisabeth (aka Betsy) Miller on 2 Jan 1846 in the Church of Scotland parish of Kilfinan, Argyllshire[2]
Duncan and Elisabeth (Betsy) had ten children, all born and baptized in the parish of Kilfinan, between 1847 and 1865:
Duncan, aged 30 and a fisherman, and Elisabeth were living in Rudhabàn, Kilfinan parish in 1851 with their three children, Ann, Janet and Mary[13]. Rudhabàn was a small farmhouse about 1½ miles northwest of Tighnabruaich adjacent to a prominant point Rudha Bàn (Gaelic for White Point) jutting into the Kyles of Bute.
The date and place of Duncan's death and burial have not been ascertained. It is conjectured that he died after his last known child, William was born in May 1865
