Born in 1808, he was the son of Alexander Macdonell and an unknown Métis mother.
During the Upper Canada Rebellion, he served as Captain of the Lancaster Glengarry Highlanders at the 1838 Battle of the Windmill.
He was called to the bar in Glengarry County in 1830. He practiced in St. Catharines before moving to Cornwall. He served as a Member of Parliament beginning in 1844 for a period of four years.
He married Sarah Chesley in 1841.
He passed away before 1878.
