Biography

Salvatore Macaluso is born and baptized 15 April 1865 in Corleone. He is the son of Maestro Biagio Macaluso and Serafina de Luca. His godfather is Maestro Vincenzo Buccheri.[1]

On the SS Italia, sailing from Palermo and arriving in New York in 1886:

8. Salvatore Macaluso, 21 (b. 1865), a barber, from Sicily[2]

At the age of 27 (b. 1866), he marries Vincenza Inzerro, age 19 (b. 1874), born in Italy to Alberto Inzerro and Antonia Tamporello, in Manhattan on 6 April 1893. His residence is listed as 219 5th Avenue. Vincenza's residence is listed as 1271 3rd Avenue. Their marriage is reported to the Health Department of the City of New York.[3][4][5]

In April 1903, Benedetto Madonia sees Salvatore Macaluso, a barber with a shop at 48 East Houston St, about some money he sent the barber to give to Giuseppe Morello for the legal defense of Giuseppe Deprimo, one of Morello's "queer pushers," and Madonia's brother-in-law. Madonia and Macaluso have dinner together. Two days later, Macaluso receives a letter from Madonia's wife, asking if he's seen her husband. He is too afraid of Morello to reply.[6] Madonia's body is found stuffed into a sugar barrel. Morello is believed to be behind his murder.

In the 1910 federal census of Manhattan, Salvatore Macaluso, 45 (b. 1865), heads a household at 2063 Madison Ave with his wife Vinzent (Vincenza), 35 (b. 1875). They have been married for 17 years (m. 1893) and have no children. He emigrated in 1885 and she in 1888. Salvatore works as a barber in a barber shop.[7]

In the 1911 city directory, under Salvatore Macaluso, barber: 3 different listings. One is at 99 Bowery, lives at 104 Hester. Another works at 143 4th Av., lives at 199 1st Av. The third a match for Macaluso-67, works at 2069 Madison Ave.[8]

On my search (Cerda, Sicily) there is a Salvatore Macaluso b. Apr 1860 in Cerda. Brothers Calogero (my Great, Great Grandfather, and Nicole born 28 Jan 1849 in Cerda. Their parents were Giovanni Macaluso and Antonia (ordeals) (DiFranco) Macaluso who was born 1818 in Cerda.
