Biography

Marco Macaluso is born 5 September 1875 in Corleone, the son of Ciro Macaluso and Maria Milazzo. His draft registration and naturalization in New York confirm this birth date. Marco is baptized two days later. His godfather is Innocenzo Curtisi.[1]

According to Marco's petition for US citizenship, he immigrates in 1887, arriving in New York on 24 September, when he is 12 years old.[2]

In 1888, Marco's sister, Cira, marries Rosario Parisi, who is like Marco, a barber from Corleone and closely related to Giuseppe Morello and other officers of his building cooperative.

Marco marries Calogera Farnaratto, daughter of Mariano Farnarotto and Francesca Calnina (actually, "Capuano"), on 1 June 1897 in Manhattan.[3] This marriage record appears to contain several spelling errors.

Marco and Calogera have at least eight children: Maria Santa/Maria (1898), Frances (c. 1900), Ciro (c. 1903), Adella/Adelina (c. 1905), Elvira (1908), one more child before 1910 who has died by this time, Mariano (c. 1913), and Alfredo (c. 1919).

Maria Santa is born 19 April 1898 in Manhattan.[4]

At Marco's naturalization, in 1899, his brother-in-law, Rosario Parisi, is the only witness. Marco and Rosario are close neighbors. Marco lives at 233 E. 117th St., NYC and Rosario lives at 2067 2nd Av.[5]

Frances is born around 1900, based on her reported ages in 1905 and 1910.

Ciro is born around 1903, based on his ages in the census.

Adella/Adelina is born around February or March of 1905, based on her age in the 1905 census.

In the 1905 New York state census, taken 1 June, Marco Macaluso, 29 (b. 1876), heads a household at 2071 2nd Av. He is a barber, born in Italy. His wife, Calogera, age 25 (b. 1880), was also born in Italy. Their children at home are Maria, 7 (b. 1898), Frances, 5 (b. 1900), Ciro, 2 (b. 1903), and Adella, 3 months (b. Feb/Mar 1905).[6]

Marco is 32 (b. 1876) when he and his wife Calogera Fornarotto Macaluso have a daughter, Elvira, on 28 February 1908 in Manhattan. His wife is 28 years old and also born in Italy.[7]

Elvira dies in infancy on 20 March 1909 in Brooklyn.[8]

In the 1910 federal census of New York City, taken 22 April, Marco Macaluso heads a household at 2067 2nd Av. Marco is 34 (b. 1876) and his wife of 12 years (m. 1898), Calogera, is 30 (b. 1880). She has had six children, three living. Both are of Italian birth. Their children at home are Frances, 9 (b. 1901), Ciro, 7 (b. 1903), and Adelina, 5 (b. 1905), all born in New York. Marco immigrated in 1887 and his wife in 1895. Marco is in real estate and insurance.[9]

Maria Santa, born in 1898, does not appear in this census, indicating she has died since the 1905 census.

Based on her answers in the 1910 census, Calogera has had one more child by 1910, whose name is not yet known, and who has died by this time.

“Marks” Macaluso, of 2067 Second Av., NY, age 43, born 5 September 1875 registers for the draft for WWI. He is a naturalized citizen, owns his own real estate insurance business at 237 E. 107th St., NY. His nearest relative is his wife, Calogera Macaluso, at his home address. He signs the card very clearly, Marco Macaluso. He is of medium height and stout build with brown eyes and black hair.[10]

In the 1930 federal census of the Bronx, Marco Macaluso, 54 (b. 1876), heads a household at 2014 Benedict Av with his wife, Calogera, 50 (b. 1880), and children Ciro, 27 (b. 1903), Adelina, 25 (b. 1905), Mariano, 17 (b. 1913), and Alfredo, 11 (b. 1919). Marco and Calogera were born in Italy and their children were born in NY. Marco immigrated in 1887 and his wife in 1896. Marco is a real estate broker. Ciro is a postal clerk, Adelina is an operator in a dress factory, and Mariano is an apprentice plasterer.[11]

Marco's son, Mariano, is a capo in the Lucchese crime family, in the 1950-80s.[12]
