Biography

Robert was the son of Archibald Hugh MacPherson (1835-1891) and Janet (Jeanette) Hall (1840-1907).

Robert George MacPherson was a Liberal Member of Parliament for Vancouver from 1903 to 1908. He later became Vancouver’s postmaster.

About 1888, Robert moved to New Westminster, British Columbia, where he entered business as a druggist.

From about 1888 to 1895, Robert operated a drug store in New Westminster.

In 1895, the MacPhersons moved from New Westminster to Kamloops, British Columbia.

While Robert was in Kamloops, he became more involved in politics. In 1896, he was the secretary of the Kamloops School Board.

In 1897, he was on the executive committee of the Kamloops Liberal Association.

By March 1898, Robert had moved to Vancouver, where he worked in a drug store at 140 Cordova Street, along with William Alexander Griffiths (1872-1930).

In October 1899, Robert increased his political activities in Vancouver. He became a Ward II committee member for the Vancouver Liberal Association. In December 1900, he became a vice-president of the Vancouver Liberal Association and president in October 1901.

When George Ritchie Maxwell, the federal Member of Parliament for Vancouver, died on November 17, 1902, Robert Macpherson became the Liberal candidate in the by-election on February 4, 1903. He won the by-election, and he won again in the 1904 federal general election.

During his time as an M.P., Robert was a strong advocate for the interests of Vancouver residents and businesses. He called for additional federal government services in Vancouver, and for more opportunities for British Columbia enterprises to get federal government contracts.

Robert MacPherson did not run for re-election in 1908. Instead, he became Vancouver’s postmaster and held this position through the First World War, until January 1920 when he took a position as the British Columbia manager of the National Life Assurance Company of Canada.[1]
