John MacDonald was born at Garth, east of Loch Lomand, Perthshire, Scotland and came to Canada in 1791. Under the guidance of Angus Shaw, he was responsible for building Fort Augustus (1795) and the Rocky Mountain House (1799). In 1799 he married his cousin Nancy Small (d. Of John’s mother’s cousin Patrick Small) and had 5 children. He continued to work with the North West Company until the War of 1812, where he was given permission to lead an attack on Fort Astoria. He was in England at the time and it is unclear whether he actually assisted in the takeover, or if it had already been done by the time he arrived. In 1823 he deserts Nancy and marries Amelia McGillis (d. 1830) daughter of Duncan McGillis (1754-1858) and had 6 children by her.
