Sarah was the daughter of Mason Lynes and Hannah Holdway.[1] She was born at Wapping Wall, Lower Shadwell, Middlesex on 13 April 1773.[2][3] She was generally known as Sally.[1]
Sarah was educated at a Quaker school in Islington, Middlesex. At age 14 she went to Clonmel, County Tipperary, Ireland to help care for the five children of the widowed prominent Irish Quaker Sarah (Pim) Grubb. In 1794 her gifts for Quaker vocal ministry were formally recognised by County Tipperary Quaker Monthly Meeting, and she travelled in Ireland, speaking publicly in public places. She returned to Middlesex, England in 1797.[1]
On 8 September 1803 Sarah married John Grubb, a cousin of Sarah (Pim) Grubb, at West Brentford Quaker Meeting House, Middlesex (now Brentford and Isleworth Quaker Meeting House). The Quaker marriage record of Gracechurch Street Monthly Meeting describes him as a merchant of Clonmel, County Tipperary, Ireland (son of Benjamin Grubb, deceased merchant of Tipperary, and Susanna); and her as daughter of Mason Lynes, deceased mast and block maker of Wapping, Middlesex, and Hannah.[4][5] She and her husband lived in Clonmel. They had four children.[1]
By 1818 Sarah felt that she was called in minister in England. That year she and her husband moved to Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. They subsequently resided in Chelmsford in Essex, Stoke Newington in Middlesex, and finally in Sudbury, Suffolk.[1]
In this period a more evangelical form of Quakerism was coming to the fore. Sarah and her husband resisted this, and in 1837 she argued against the visit of the evangelically-minded Quaker Joseph John Gurney to America.[1]
Sarah died at Sudbury, Suffolk on 16 March 1842[6] and was buried at Sudbury Quaker burial ground.[1] Her death was registered at Sudbury in the 1st quarter of 1842.[7] In the Quaker publication the Annual Monitor there is a lengthy and pious obituary.[6]
