Application for Pension:

State of Tennessee
Weakley County
County Court, July Term 1837
On this 3rd day of July 1837 personally appeared in open Court, before the County Court new sitting, Nathan Luttrell a resident of the County of Weakley, in the State of Tennessee, aged ninety years, who being first duly sworn according to Law, doth on his oath make the following Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. That he entered the service of the United States in the year 1780 as well as he can now recollect under the following named officers and served as herein stated. I was drafted for a three month tour, and entered the service under a Capt. whose name I cannot now recollect, but our Major was named Chun. At the period of my first draft I resided in Farquhar County, in the State of Virginia. During my first three month service we were in no particular engagement, but marched to the head quarters of General Marquis Lafayette, near Richmond Virginia, from whence we proceded to the Chickahomey Mills, where we had a skirmish with a Company of the British light horse, and killed some, & took others prisoners. The prisoners, three in number we took to Richmond, and there being no person there to receive them, we returned with them, and give them up to the Regular troops. We then marched up the country, & passed near Fredericksburg, and shortly after my first three months tour expired. And on my return home, I was again drafted for a second three months tour, and entered the service under Capt. Hellman with Col. Edmunds and Genl. Washington, two of our superior officers. Our company marched to old Williamsburt, & there joined the ballance of the army, from whence we proceeded to the Town of Little York, where we were stationed, untill the memorable engagement between Genl. Washington & Lord Cornwallis, which resulted in the defeat of the British army, and

The consequent surrender of Lord Cornwallis to the American Commander in Chief. From York, the Company of Capt Hellman to which I belonged, together with several other Companies took charge of a number of British, who had been taken prisoners at the battle of York, and guarded them to Winchester in Virginia, where we give them up. With these events my second three month tour expired, making the whole time which I served six months. During the whole of which time I was a private. I received a discharge at the end of each tour of service, both of which I have long since lost, not deeming them of any particular service to me. I have no documentary evidence and I know of no person whose testimony I can procure, who can testify to my services. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity, except the present and declares that his name is not on the Pension Roll of any State. Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid.

Nathan had only one wife, Priscilla Ann Shelton. Marriage to Nancy Sarah Shelton is based on erroneous information and records which pertain to someone else. She probably is a non-existent person. See her profile for details.

Not sure what to do with Nancy's profile, would like to see it deleted or merged into profile of Priscilla Shelton.
