U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Richard Luttrell Sr. was a Virginia colonist.

Richard Luttrell was born about 1693 in either Ireland or the Virginia Colony. He passed away before 26 May 1766 (the date his last Will was proved in court) in Fauquier County, Virginia Colony.

His parents are Unknown at this time.

Richard Luttrell married Mary Dermont about 1719 in Stafford County, Virginia Colony. Their first child, Michael, was born in 1720. They had eleven children.

Land Transactions

  • 12 March 1722 the Proprietors of the Northern Neck of Virginia "conveyed unto Richd Lutterall" 354 acres on Brent Town Run in nearby Stafford County. Brent Town no longer exists and its original location is not precisely known.[1]
  • 7 July 1745 Richard received a grant of 58 acres in Prince William County (formerly Stafford County).[1]
  • 26 November 1760 Richard purchased 240 acres on a branch of Negro Run in Fauquier County from George Crump. (Note: Richard has not moved, the counties changed names around him.) On the same date Richard transferred 70 acres of his original 354 acre grant, now in Fauquier County, to his son Samuel.[1]

Death

No further record is found for Richard until his last Will, dated 10 September 1764, was proved in court 26 May 1766 in Fauquier County.[2] Richard probably died about April 1766. Named in his last Will are "my loving wife Mary;" sons James, Michael, Samuel, John, Robert, and Richard Luttrell; daughters Anstiss, Mary, Susanna, and Sarah Luttrell, and Catherine Coram; granddaughter Mary Coram. Wife Mary and sons Richard and Robert named executors.[1]

In his Will inventory he had books & a prayer book. This indicates he was well educated & came from a more wealthy family as alot of people didn't read or write back then.

I believe that we are assuming he came from Ireland because some had him connected to James Luttrell (an indentured servant) as a father, who came from Tankardstown, Ireland also because a Robert Luttrell of Luttrellstown Castle, Dublin, Ireland may have immigrated to Westmoreland County, Virginia and be a possible father. But let's not forget, that his great grandson believed that Richard was the immigrating ancestor who came from England.

"In 1881, John Willis Luttrell, is quoted as having expressed the belief that his great grandfather, Richard Luttrell, emigrated to this country from England."[Prichard, Pg 195]

Richard is the apparent common ancestor of the DC877 Y-DNA haplotype group as documented on FTDNA within the Irish Type III (Dalcassian) project. Most of the members of this group are surnamed Littrell/Luttrell/Litteral, but some are Corum--nominally descendants of Richard's daughter Catherine. Similarly there is a Rowland member of the group who is believed to be a male-line Littrell by birth descended from Richard's son Samuel's son Daniel who was adopted by a branch of the Rowland family descended from a daughter of Daniel . See http://www.rcasey.net/DNA/R_L226/Haplotrees/L226_Home.pdf p104 Ken Littrell is the referenced Littrell/634478 Big Y 700 test result, and Eddie Littrell is the referenced Lutre/235830 Y-111 result. Arguably, through Y-DNA results as posted in the FTDNA L226 project, the male lines leading from Richard to these two individuals is either conformed by DNA or at a minimum confident. This is true of at least one other son whose descendant is not on Wikitree as well. The removed father for Richard is James Luttrell. The proposed alternative is Robert Luttrell. The parentage of both alternatives is not well documented, but while their parentage and connection to Richard is disputed, their existence is documented.

Just an FYI, Eddie Littrell is my cousin. I manage his FTDNA account since his passing. My grandpa couldn't read or write (dyslexia) and the last name changed from Luttrell to Littrell with him.
My maternal grandmother was a Luttrell and I am a descendant of Richard Luttrell Sr. I match on Gedmatch with a descendant of Robert Luttrell (the one listed on his Wikitree profile). I have 2 small matches with that individual, largest segment = 4.3 cM, total Half-Match segments (HIR) 7.8cM (0.217 Pct). The shared segments are on the 1st and 10th chromosome. However, Wikitree did find that he and I are also 13th cousins four times removed on my maternal grandfather's side, the closest of 289 common ancestors.

I do not see a descendant of James Luttrell listed on his profile, however one is listed on the profile of one of his grandchildren. I compared with descendants shown for a grandchild of James Luttrell and got the following: Largest segment = 5.3 cM. Total Half-Match segments (HIR) 59.5cM (1.658 Pct). 15 shared segments found for this comparison. 50.824 Pct SNPs are full identical. And on the X chromosome, Largest segment = 6.4 cM, Total segments 17.5cM (9.24 Pct), 4 shared segments found for this comparison. Wikitree found 200 common ancestors, the closest of which is that we are 10th cousin once removed.

It might be a good idea for several descendants to compare and see if we are related to these person in the same way (markers on the same chromosomes). It may help us to determine whether James, Robert, or some other Luttrell, is our ancestor.

Hi Ken, I think we've messaged before on the FTDNA L226 message board. I'm curious as to how James Luttrell came to be removed as Richard's father?

I came to the same conclusion myself while working with my mother's atDNA matches on ancestry.com. I've identified about 90 matches for her who descend from Richard Luttrell, b. 1693. But I found no matches who descended from James so I removed him as Richard's father on my tree. My method of identifying matches is solely based on the matches correctly identifying their ancestors in their tree - so there is room for error when the match has the wrong ancestor in their tree.

I've been referring to the book, "Luttells in America: Decendants of James, Robert and Vincent Luttrell" by Shirley Strutton Dalton. Do you have any other source recommendations?
