Biography

This profile is part of the St Helens, Lancashire One Place Study.

Richard Lunt was born in about 1797 in Prescot, Lancashire.

Richard married Martha Large on 25 Aug 1823 at Rainford Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. Both were of the local parish, and neither had been married before; Richard was a labourer. The witnesses were Richard Davies and Elizabeth Wilcock.

Their daughter Mary was christened on 16 May 1824 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. Her father's occupation was recorded as labourer, and the family's address as Prescot.

Their daughter Margaret was christened on 19 Jul 1826 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. Her father's occupation was recorded as labourer, and the family's address as Prescot.

Their son William was christened on 19 Apr 1829 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. His father's occupation was recorded as labourer, and the family's address as Prescot.

Little Margaret died at 4 years old, and was buried on 25 Jul 1830 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. Her address was recorded as Prescot.

Little William died in 1831, aged 2½, and was buried on 1 Apr 1831 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. His address was recorded as Prescot.

A Margaret Lunt who died at a week old and was buried on 29 Jun 1831 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire may have been their daughter, since they seem to have preferred to re-use names of their children who died (as was common in the area at the time.) Her address was recorded as Prescot.

A William Lunt who died 3 days old and was buried on 16 Aug 1832 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire may have been their son. His address was recorded as Prescot.

Another daughter Margaret was christened on 18 May 1834 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. Her father's occupation was recorded as labourer, and the family's address as Prescot.

Their daughter Esther was born in about 1839 in Prescot district.[1] She died at 2 days old[2] and was buried on 6 Feb 1839 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. Her address was recorded as Eccleston.[3]

Their son William was born in about 1840 in Prescot district.[4] He died in early infancy[5] and was buried on 15 Mar 1840 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. His address was recorded as Eccleston.[6]

Another daughter Esther was born in about April-May 1841 in Prescot; her birth appears not to have been registered.

By June 6th 1841, the family was living in Hackley Moss, Eccleston. Richard was an agricultural labourer. Baby Esther, not yet named, was 5 weeks old.

By March 30th 1851, Richard and Martha were living in Eccleston with their daughters Margret and Esther. Richard was an earthenware dealer.

By April 7th 1861, Richard was widowed, and living in Atherton Street, Prescot with his daughter Esther and his grandson Peter Bradshaw (who was listed in the census as his nephew - perhaps it was Esther who supplied the information and got confused whose relationship to him was wanted). Richard was a labourer.

Richard died in 1870, and was buried on 17 Nov 1870 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. His age was recorded as 73, and his address as Whiston.

Research Notes

There were two Richard Lunts close in age and born in Prescot parish (both christened at Prescot St Mary's) -

  • son of James & Sarah chr 15 Feb 1795 (Whiston, labourer)
  • son of William Lunt & Mary chr 18 Feb 1798 (Prescot, labourer).

One appears to have died in 1860 (buried 18 Oct 1860 Prescot St Mary's age 64 abode Prescot) the other in 1870 (buried 17 Nov 1870 Prescot St Mary's age 73 abode Whiston).

The FamilySearch tree entry for the Richard married to Margaret has the 1870 burial as his, perhaps based on the abode being Whiston (his 1851 birthplace), but the sole matching 1861 record appears to match the other Richard - it has birthplace Prescot, and listed in the same household are a daughter Esther and a nephew Peter Bradshaw, both of whom appear to be relatives of the Richard married to Martha - he had a daughter Esther, although the age is off by 2 years while Margaret's Richard did not, and Peter Bradshaw appears to be his grandson (daughter Mary's son).

According to the FamilySearch tree, Margaret wife of Richard died in 1859, so I didn't try to find her in 1861 to verify her husband had died before 1861; their youngest son appears to have been boarding in Haydock in 1861.

It seems likely based on the 1851 census birthplaces that Margaret's husband was the son of James & Richard, who were living in Whiston when he was born; however the FamilySearch tree has William and Mary as his parents, and the fact that they named a child Mary, and more than one child William, supports this idea. Since Whiston was in the parish of Prescot, it's not really possible to conclude which baptism & parents match which Richard with any certainty based on current evidence. Therefore an approximate birth year between the two possible dates has been assigned to this profile.
