Brief History of Penobscot, Hancock, Maine:
In 1713 Acadia became part of the British Empire after the Treaty of Utrecht. The earliest permanent settlement began in the 1760's and John Perkins was one of those settlers. In 1776 the town consisted of about 20 families.
Prior to incorporation in 1787 Penobscot was called Magorbigwaduce Plantation or Maja Bagadoos. Penobscot, town and former plantation is situated on the sw side of Hancock county, eastern shore of the Penobscot River and surrounds the headwaters of the Bagaduce River. Settled in 1760's Penobscot set off land to form Castine in 1796. Later set-off's followed.
During the American Revolutionary War, the British Royal navy sent troops to this area in 1779, and they built a fort near the entrance to the bay on the highest point of ground and it was named Fort George. Naval response by the colonial Massachusetts Board of War resulted in failure which was called the Penobscot Expedition. The War of 1812 soon broke out and in 1814 the British were able to take the land without opposition. During this 2nd occupation the British authorities collected various taxes and custom duties.
