Biography

BIRTH
"Samuel Lunt (Ensign Henry, Henry) was born 26 March 1696 in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts, a son of Ensign Henry Lunt and Jane (Browne) Lunt his wife." [1] [2] [3] [4]

Samuel became a "Cordwainer" by trade. [2] His occupation is noted in a number of Cumberland County deeds.

MARRIAGE and CHILDREN
He married Charity Emery about 1719/1720. Both author's Davis and T.S. Lunt say Charity's father Job Emery was "of Kittery" when she and Samuel married. [Davis, Vol. II, 538] [2] [Davis, p.18] [3] [T.S.Lunt, p.267-8]. [4] Family history author Rufus Emery says Charity was born the 24th April 1698, Berwick, Maine [5] the daughter of Job Emery and wife Charity (Nason) Emery. [5] Emery says Charity married in Berwick. [5] Their marriage location is noted in this WikiTree profile as being Kittery. Author Rufus Emery also says the couple resided at Falmouth.

Samuel and Charity had the following known children:

RESIDENCY and other Miscellany
As already stated, in 1720 the couple are believed to have married in Kittery but then relocate a few miles off the Maine/New Hampshire coast to Star Island Isles of Shoals, York County, Maine.

In 1724 he was a resident at Star island [today in the New Hampshire side of these islands] when he witnessed the Will of Edward Gould [Davis, Vol. II, p. 538] [2] and when he also conveyed to his brother John Lunt his interest in their father's [Newbury, Massachusetts] estate. [Davis Ancestry, Vol. II: 537-8, original source Essex Deeds, 56:65] [2] The distance between Kittery and the Isle of Shoals is about nine miles. The Isle of Shoals is a designated name for a group of small islands off the Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Kittery, Maine coast line. [7]

16th March 1729 dated deed "Samuel Lunt of Falmouth, cordwainer," purchased from William Pepperell of Kittery for the sum of L10. (ten pounds) one half acre of land situated in Kittery at a place called Kittery Point which is a jut of land bounded on the east by the Piscataqua River. Wife Margery Pepperell surrenders her right of dower. The deed was received and recorded the 8th April 1730. [8]

In a York County Deed dated the 12th October 1731 where William Pepperell (and wife "Margerry") of Kittery sell 1/4 acre of a parcel at Kittery Point (cove) to John Morse of Kittery, Black Smith, the land description says that the quarter acre being sold to Morse is bounded on several sides by "Mr. Samuel Lunt's land" and being mostly between "Lunt's stone wall".[9]

1737 he relocated to Kittery "on the mainland" [Davis, Vol. II:538] [2] In a Will dated 25 April 1737, "Mr. Samuel Lunt of Kittery, Cordwainer, with Charles Frost and Richard Cutt, Jun. both also of Kittery", are named Executor's of the estate of George Collings in his Will. [10]

In a Will dated the 25th April 1737 "Mr. Samuel Lunt of Kittery, Cordwainer" was one of the named Executors for the estate of George Collings of Kittery. [The Will was probated 11th Nov 1747; inventory returned 8 Dec 1747.] [11]

1743 he purchased land from Jonathan Flint on Back Cove at Falmouth, Maine where he and Charity resided their till death. [Davis Ancestry, Vol. II:538 quoting York Deeds, 24:89] [2]The distance between Kittery and Falmouth, Maine is about 57 U.S. miles. Both are coastal towns.

On the 10th March 1752 in a Falmouth annuel town meeting Samuel Lunt [Sr.] was voted with others to be among those the town referred to as "hog drivers" and who were expected to carry out their duties on behalf of the community as a whole. [Falmouth Town Records, p.197] [12]

Years after his somewhat early death, in a deed dated 12th October 1773, widow Charity (Emery) Lunt of Falmouth, for a sum of L98.13.4, sold to her son Daniel Lunt, Blacksmith, of Falmouth, "the land left to her by her husband Samuel Lunt in his last Will and Testament which he purchased from Jonathan Flint and situated in Back Cove at Falmouth, Cumberland County" consisting of 27 1/2 acres. [13]
