Biography

Mary was born in 1864, the third child of Reuben B. Lowell and Elizabeth Emerson. She grew up in Calais, Maine, just across the border from New Brunswick, Canada. In September 1888 she married Frank W. Black, probably in Calais (*) "Frank W. Black, formerly of Calais, Me., now of Kansas City, Mo., was married Wednesday morn. to Miss Mary Emerson Lowell of Calais." Mary's older sister Minerva Lowell had married Frank's older brother Howard Black in 1883. Mary's husband was an auditor and in 1891 they moved to Brooklyn, New York. In 1905 the Black brothers were living with the Lowell sisters in Brooklyn. Frank Black became prominent in the business community there and later Vice President of the Chase National Bank (see Frank Watts Black obituary). The couple loved to travel and after getting their passports made trips to Cuba, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. They had one child, Frances Emerson Black, who died at age 18 in 1909 of kidney and heart disease. After Frank died in 1936 Mary moved to Miami, Florida. A death record hasn't been located yet.
