Episcopal Chaplain of Shanghai, China.
He was baptised on 25 December 1811 at St Saviour's Church, Southwark, London, the son of Mary D'Oyly and John Lowder of Lansdown Crescent, Bath. He was the nephew of Thomas Henry Lowder who married Maria Lewis (John Owen's 4 x great aunt on his father's side).
He was ordained and then married Lucy Windsor on 1 September 1840 at St Swithin's Church, Walcot near Bath.
He was appointed Chaplain of Shanghai but died when bathing off the Island of Poo Too.
His death was reported in The Spectator "On the 24th September, at the Island of Poo-too, the Rev John Lowder, Episcopal Chaplain of Shanghai, China, in his 39th year." According to a report in the Chinese Repository "his body was found in Ningpo and buried there."
